marble arch designed by john

Marble Arch, designed by John Nash in 1827 to be state entrance to the cour d'honneur of Buckingham Palace. Relocated in 1851, it is now stands isolated + incongruously, on a large traffic island at the junction of Oxford St, Park Lane & Edgware Rd. Rooms inside the rebuilt arch were used as a police station - 1851/1968? Housed the royal constables of the Park, later the Metropolitan Police. Samuel Parkes, awarded the VC in the Charge of the Light Brigade, 1854; was stationed there early 1860's
